About Washington State Located in the Pacific Northwest, it is bordered by Canada on the North and Idaho on the East. The Columbia River marks a large portion of the boundary with Oregon on the South, and the Pacific Ocean is on the West. Clark County also shares this Columbia River border. The City of Portland Oregon is located directly south across the river from Clark Counties City of Vancouver, both cities are often referred to as the " Portland Vancouver metro area". The climate East of the Cascade Mountains is much drier than is Western Washington. Much of the land is used for dry farming. Irrigation has converted many of the river valleys east of the Cascades (especially the Yakima Valley and the Wenatchee Valley) into garden areas. This region contains most of Washington's vineyards; from the 1980s the state has developed an important wine industry. Washington leads the country in the production of apples, sweet cherries, and pears and is a major wheat producer, chiefly in the hilly Palouse area of southeastern Washington. Eastern Washington Palouse Country Columbia River Yakima Valley More than half of the state's area is forested, Western Washington is separated by the dividing line of the Cascade Mountains. Recreational opportunities abound in the state of Washington. Visitors are attracted to Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, Fort Vancouver and Whitman Mission national historic sites, and Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. The Long Beach Washington Peninsula is always a favorite destination for Clark County residents. Mt.Saint Helen's, which erupted in 1980, is now a national monument. Both Mt Adams and Mt St Helen's are within a 1 or 2 hour drive from just about anywhere in Clark County. There are unlimited recreational opportunities for camping, hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, and hunting in the Gifford Pinchot
